WHO IS GASPARD OIL?
A fine question, and one worthy of serious preoccupation. Sadly, the first answer to such an enquiry has to be presented as a correction: Gaspard Oil not so much is as was. The renowned hero of aviation flourished in the early 20th century, being born in Poland in the year 1889 and disappearing mysteriously somewhere in the early 1940s. While Gaspard Oil spent his childhood in Poland and studied for a while in France, he is most widely known for his aeronautical experiments, which he conducted during his long solitary years in the Western Sahara. This part of Gaspard Oil's life is also the one most broadly used in the lyrics of Gaspard Oil the band, who in turn have honoured the old master by kindly stealing His name.
As a lyrical source, Gaspard Oil's life is used by the band with rough and kindhearted dishonesty: the historical Gaspard Oil is used as a basis for a mythology which, however, also utilizes careful studying of the man's life and well-placed hints to actual historical anecdotes concerning the real Gaspard Oil. Great care should be taken when examining the lyrics of Gaspard Oil the band: since most anecdotes about the Man's life are of rather dubious accuracy, the songs should be viewed as mere artistically distorted renderings of them.
